Why I Stopped Chasing What’s New
Early in my career, novelty felt like momentum. New tools, new trends, new visual languages. Staying current meant staying relevant. Or so it seemed.
Over time, that urgency softened.
Not because I stopped paying attention, but because I started recognizing the pattern.
The Speed of Trends
Trends move fast because they have to. Their power depends on freshness. Once widely adopted, they lose the very quality that made them desirable.
That does not make trends useless. They are signals. They show where attention is moving. They reveal cultural shifts and emerging needs.
But they are not foundations.
Design built primarily on trend rarely lasts. It ages quickly, often before the work has had time to do its job.
What Trends Don’t Teach You
Trends rarely teach judgment.
They provide answers without requiring questions. They encourage adoption rather than evaluation. They reward speed over understanding.
When design decisions are driven by what is new rather than what is needed, clarity suffers. The work becomes reactive instead of intentional.
Over time, that reactivity erodes confidence. You start chasing relevance instead of building trust.
Taste Is Slower
Taste develops at a different pace.
It is shaped by repetition, consequence, and restraint. It deepens through exposure to what holds up and what quietly fails.
Taste does not reject trends outright. It filters them. It asks whether something serves the work, the audience, and the context before letting it in.
That filtering takes time. It cannot be rushed.
What Staying Taught Me
Working long enough on the same brands and systems revealed something trends could not. Consistency builds credibility. Familiarity builds trust.
Audiences respond to work that feels grounded. They notice when design decisions repeat thoughtfully across time.
That recognition creates stability. Stability creates freedom.
When the foundation is strong, you can evolve without chasing.
The Relief of Letting Go
Stopping the chase brought relief.
I no longer felt pressure to adopt every new aesthetic or tool immediately. I could observe, test selectively, and integrate what made sense.
Design decisions became calmer. More deliberate. Less defensive.
The work improved because it was no longer trying to prove anything.
What I Pay Attention to Now
I still watch what is new. I just do not treat it as a directive.
I pay more attention to clarity, structure, and usefulness. To how design supports understanding over time. To whether something still works a year later.
I look for ideas that age well rather than peak quickly.
Why This Matters
Design careers are long. Chasing novelty indefinitely is exhausting and unsustainable.
Taste, once developed, becomes an anchor. It allows you to navigate change without being pulled apart by it.
Stopping the chase was not a loss of ambition. It was a recalibration.
I still care deeply about the work. I just care more about what lasts.
